Hi, I'm Mel Curtis, the lead artist and managing director of Meli Makes.

Growing up in Marion County, Oregon, I’ve always found joy in creativity and the outdoors. Art has been my voice since childhood, leading me to earn a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Painting and complete the first year of a Master’s in painting program in New York City before returning to Oregon to focus on environmental education.

For over half of my life I have worked with youth ages 2-18 in both indoor and outdoor settings. I am a registered care provider with the Central Background Registry for the state of Oregon. My most recent experience being on the the environmental education team for Portland Parks & Recreation.

Through my work, I realized that art should be for everyone, not just those deemed "talented" or privileged. This inspired me to create Meli Makes, a space where art and nature come together to foster connection, healing, and creativity. We offer art classes, nature walks, and special events for people of all ages and backgrounds, with a focus on inclusivity, community, and self-expression. Whether you're exploring art  or nature for the first time or deepening your practice, I invite you to join us on this creative journey.
